Department of Homeland Security pushes REAL ID deadline to 2023

first_imgReal ID driver’s license – Department of Motor Vehicles(WASHINGTON) — The federal government is delaying the deadline for the REAL ID enforcement for a second time.Every domestic air traveler 18 and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, state-issued enhanced driver’s license or another TSA-acceptable form of identification beginning on May 3, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security announced Tuesday. The original deadline of Oct. 1, 2020, was postponed for one year due to the pandemic. The second delay is also “due to circumstances resulting from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” according to the DHS press release.“The pandemic has significantly impacted states’ ability to issue REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and identification cards, with many driver’s licensing agencies still operating at limited capacity,” the release states. All 50 states, Washington, D.C., and four of the five U.S. territories covered by the REAL ID Act and related regulations are now compliant with REAL ID security standards, the government said. The regulation was put in place in 2005 as a way to ensure travelers’ identities following the 9/11 attacks, according to the DHS. Only recently did all 50 states come into compliance.Currently, only 43% of driver’s licenses issued in the U.S. are REAL ID-compliant, according to DHS data.Copyright © 2021, ABC Audio. pSemi Ranks Among Top 10 Semiconductor Manufacturers on the Patent Power 2017 List

first_imgpSemi Corporation (formerly known as Peregrine Semiconductor) has announced its ranking for the second consecutive year on the “IEEE Spectrum” Patent Power Scorecard. This annually published benchmark identifies the technology world’s most valuable patent portfolios and ranks the companies by a Pipeline Power score. The 2017 scorecard ranks the pSemi patent portfolio among the top 10 in the semiconductor manufacturing sector. The pSemi patent portfolio now exceeds 500 issued and pending patents and continues to aggressively grow. Last week, pSemi announced its corporate name change from Peregrine Semiconductor to pSemi and celebrated its 30-year anniversary of semiconductor technology innovation.  The Patent Power Scorecard is an annual benchmarking of company patent portfolios by 1790 Analytics. Companies are ranked on Pipeline Power: an overall measure of the strength of the patent portfolio that considers both its size and quality. The 2017 Scorecard is based on an analysis of U.S. Patent and Trademark Office records through the end of 2016. Other organizations on the 2017 scorecard include Amazon, Google, Apple, Qualcomm, Intel, Microsoft, Samsung and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). pSemi ranks in the top 10 when compared to semiconductor giants in the processor, memory and fabrication areas, and pSemi leads peer companies in the wireless connectivity space. For more information on the scorecard’s methodology, please read “Constructing the Patent Power Scorecard.”To view an interactive table of the 2017 scorecard, click here.last_img read more

Maasai women lead solar revolution in Kenya

first_imgRural communities in Kenya are benefitting from a solar power drive by Green Energy Africa. Maasai women buy the equipment from the organisation, sell it for a small profit, and are empowered to install it themselves. Maasai women are changing their communities for the better by installing solar powered lights in villages. (Image: Green Energy Africa) • DNA detective work could end poaching • Local researchers honoured at their ‘Oscars’ • Royal boost for conservation in Africa • Solar car races around southern Africa • South African and Indian scientists team up Priya PitamberWhen night falls in Kenya’s Kajiado County villages, such as Magadi, residents face danger that is relatively unknown in big, bright cities. Their cattle becomes prey for hyenas and big cats; and they breathe in smoke from the fires and lamps as children try to complete their school work and people try to keep warm and cook their food.Things are slowly changing, though. An initiative is helping entire villages by providing solar powered lights and empowering women, by teaching them to install these lights themselves.Jackline Naiputa told news agency Reuters that the impact of solar technology was unparalleled. She heads up the Osopuko-Edonyinap group, one of five taking the lead in spreading alternative energy in the area. “The light scares the hyenas away, so we don’t have to worry about losing our animals at night,” she explained. In 2014, she lost 10 goats to big cats. Before she got solar lamps installed in her homestead, her son used to brave cold nights in the cattle enclosure to guard her livestock. But now, she and all her children sleep in the warmth of indoors. The processThe initiative, by Green Energy Africa (GEA), is called Women and Entrepreneurship in Renewable Energy Project (Werep). The goal is to convert the whole of Kajiado County to solar power. The organisation trains women to install solar devices themselves on to homes. The women buy the energy-efficient lights, solar panels, and rechargeable batteries from GEA at a discounted rate. They use donkeys to transport them across various villages, and sell them for a small profit. Donkeys are used to transport solar panels across Kajiado County in Kenya. (Image: Green Energy Africa)“The solar energy drive began around September 2014,” the organisation said. “And so far about 2 000 households in the country have adopted solar technology.” There have been 200 women participating in the Werep initiative.According to GEA, only 23% of Kenyans have access to the national electricity grid and only 5% of rural communities are connected.Benefits all aroundBesides being able to protect their cattle, and their children being able to study at night, there are other perks to using solar energy. It is much cheaper than both kerosene and firewood.“The nearest market where one can charge a cellphone or buy kerosene is 15 kilometres away, and it is only held one day a week,” Naiputa explained. Before the installation of the solar panels, she would spend 40 Kenyan shillings (about R5) a day on kerosene and 100 shillings a week to charge the family’s two mobile phones.Fewer trees are also being cut for firewood. The National Environmental Management Authority has said that chopping down trees means they now cover just 1% of the land area. There will also be overall improved health benefits as less fire smoke is inhaled. “According to a 2014 World Health Organization report, household smoke was responsible for 1.6 million deaths worldwide,” noted Reuters.“Our community customs do not allow women to own any property,” Naiputa said. “But now women here own the solar technology, and it is something we are very happy about.”last_img read more

Supporting Others in HR

first_imgWelcome to 2019!  With the whole new year ahead of us, it’s a great time to take a look at ourselves, and how we are going to approach this year.  If you, like me, have been in HR for quite some time, you may have more to give than you think.Nearly three years ago, I had the opportunity to co-present at a local HR meeting, my first public speaking engagement.  (As an introvert, that was a huge step, but I have since embraced getting comfortable with being uncomfortable!) Since then, I’ve been fortunate to have many more speaking opportunities locally and nationally.  Last year, I started teaching a SHRM Certification class. Public speaking and teaching put me in the very fortunate position of regularly being in front of many HR professionals.I am 20+ years into my HR career.  Occasionally over the years I had been asked for and had given advice. And I had asked for advice and guidance myself.  But these new endeavors put me in a position of accidental “expert,” which at first was difficult for me to embrace. ME? Why? People are asking me for advice regularly?  I’m helping to shape emerging HR professionals, and reinvigorate established HR professionals? Yes, me. And you too. We all have something to say, and we all can help others inside – and outside – our profession.  Here is what I have learned. It is important to connect with others inside and outside HR.  Build your #HRTribe – which can and should include those outside of HR. (Mine does.)  Share your knowledge with others. Follow fellow HR practitioners on Twitter. Connect on LinkedIn.  Listen to their podcasts and watch their YouTube videos. As a bonus, you will learn something! There are many of you doing amazing work here, but perhaps none more so than Steve Browne, who seems to make it his life’s mission to encourage the #HRTribe to connect with each other.  Listen to him. You will not regret it.You have a responsibility to give back to those seeking your help. Take that phone call. Respond to that email.  It may be very difficult for an emerging professional to have the courage to reach out.  Remember when you were in that position and extend your hand. I never turn down a LinkedIn request from a fellow HR professional.  I never fail to answer a message, email or return a phone call from an HR professional asking for advice or guidance. Do this regularly, without expecting anything at all.  As an amazing bonus, you will get much more back than you give. When you get that excited call from an HR professional who is newly certified. When you get the email from an HR professional that they were offered that job you coached them to prepare for.  When an HR professional tells you that you gave them the courage to apply to speak at a conference, and then knocks it out of the park. It feels amazing to do things for others. So do it!Don’t be afraid to ask for help – you should never stop learning.  If you are new to HR, you should do this all the time.  It can be scary, but it is so worth it. Even if you are not new to HR, you should be continuously learning.  One of the best ways to do this is to ask for help from others. I have a wonderful community of HR Rebels in my home state of NH, and I regularly reach out to them for advice. In fact, I don’t know what I would do without this group!  Always support.  Don’t compete. Competition can be good.  However, when it comes to the workplace, there is not always as much support as there should be.  So reach out your hand to the person who is up for the same promotion as you. Support them if they receive it.  Network with a fellow speaker or podcaster. Share their posts on social media. Go high, and stay high. Be the person you aspire to be.Here’s to an amazing, supportive 2019!last_img read more

He makes challenges and that’s what you want because you can’t tiptoe about an arena like this.”He’ll gain experience, he’s still very young in his game and he’s learning all of the time.”No, he’s not [affected by comments from opposition managers]. That’s something he’ll deal with in his career.”You have to always protect your players but you always have to be honest as well. I didn’t see it as a bad challenge.
