Western (Anna Cappuccitti) The three-time defending champion University of Toronto Varsity Blues figure skating team reached the podium in all eight events on Day 1 of the OUA championship (Feb. 12) in Kingston, Ont.Toronto sits in second place in the team standings with 56 points, just six points behind the Western Mustangs (62). The Blues racked up two gold, four silver and two bronze medals on the day.Leading the way on Day 1 was sophomore standout Melanie Zavitski. The Barrie, Ont., native capped off Day 1 by pairing with rookie Morgan Garland to win the senior similar pairs. Earlier in the day, Zavitski and veteran Chyna Hui claimed the star 8/9 similar dance silver medal, while also teaming up with Rachel Greben, Keiko Marshall and Felicia Bonitatibus to earn the bronze medal in the pairs fours freeskate.Marshall skated her way to gold in the novice short program, while Hui garnered the silver medal in the star 10 solo dance.Stephanie Carroll and Emma Jianopolous finished second in the star 10 similar dance, while Jianopolous also claimed the silver medal in the gold solo dance.Ehren Chang rounded out Toronto’s podium finishes with a bronze-medal performance in the men’s freeskate.Day 2 kicks off with the open rhythm dance tomorrow (Feb. 13) at 8 a.m.DAY 1 STANDINGS1.
