PWP now offered online

first_imgPWP now offered online New Bar members needing to take the Young Lawyers Division’s Practicing With Professionalism course may now do so online rather than attending an in-person course. “Getting PWP online was a monumental task that spanned years to create and plan. We are glad to provide this dynamic programming to our constituents so they may better understand why practicing with professionalism is a hallmark of our profession,” said Eric Elms of Orlando, who co-chairs the YLD PWP Committee with Cherine Smith Valbrun of Ft. Lauderdale. All new Bar members are required to take the PWP course within a year after being admitted to the Bar. This course provides instruction on ethical and professional issues and fulfills a Basic Skills Requirement. YLD President Katherine Hurst Miller said the division still holds a few in-person PWP classes throughout the state, but the online course is available for those who find it more convenient to watch in the office or at home, and who want to break the CLE into shorter segments, or when an in-person course is sold out. “It’s finally really online,” Miller said. “It’s there now with the Bar’s other on-demand CLE course offerings.” Elms said offering the PWP program online wasn’t done to just say The Florida Bar embraces technology, “but because this is what our constituents want from CLE programs — accessibility, affordability, and practicality. We listened, and provided what we consider to be a top-notch production.” Elms said the Practicing With Professionalism course has undergone many transformations to keep up with the increased number of attorneys practicing in Florida and the changes brought on by technology. “The Florida Bar has done a great job keeping up with the changes by adjusting the way PWP was delivered to attorneys who just obtained their Florida Bar cards,” Elms said.  Miller added the YLD tried to get some of the best speakers from around the state — like a judicial panel moderated by Third DCA Judge Ed Scales and featuring Chief Justice Jorge Labarga, Justice Barbara Pariente, and Justice Fred Lewis — and enhanced the presentation with a few graphics to make viewing more visually interesting. Elms said The Florida Bar is one of the first states to put a PWP program online. The seminar is available at https://tfb.inreachce.com. Do Your Homework Before Sharing “Missing Person” Posts

first_imgYou see a post on Facebook or Twitter from someone you interact with online. They’re not a close friend, family member or someone you work with. It’s someone you met through Twitter, an online game, or they belong to one of your Facebook groups, but you’ve never met them in person. They’re saying their wife or son is missing. Could you let them know if you see their missing family member? What do you do? Do Your HomeworkIf you’re on social media, it may seem natural to quickly spread the news or share the post. You want to help others and social media makes it easy. But do you have all the facts? As Kimberley Chapman points out in Be Careful About “Missing Person Posts”:It’s one thing to circulate a current Amber Alert, ensuring that all of the information is there, that it comes from a proper source (ie don’t just reshare, CHECK THE LINKS), and that the answer is to call police, not just a random number. And be sure to update your post when the issue is resolved. But when someone you don’t know personally asks you to contact them about their missing family member, and they don’t provide:DateLocationand they ask you not to call police, think twice. You may not know the full back story. The family member may have escaped an abusive relationship. Or they may have changed their identity and left the area.Is the person really missing? Always check the story. Follow up on any links provided. Check the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. Be ResponsibleYou want to share posts from police looking for abducted or missing persons. If you see the person or know something about someone who is missing or abducted, always call the police.Be suspicious of posts about a missing person with no mention of date or location. SaaS: Analysts Slam SAP’s On-Demand Initiative

first_imgSAP CEO Henning Kagermann called it “the most important announcement I’ve made in my career.” Henning called it a “complete solution” designed for “end to end, flexible, adaptable, business processes within the company and beyond the boundaries of a company.”SAP is hoping that the new platform will be adopted by more than 10,000 companies by 2010 — right now about 20 companies are using it.But analysts were quick to criticize SAP’s on-demand strategy. The new platform is called “Business by Design” and is SAP’s first attempt at the SaaS market. Comments included:Forrester: “Key features like easy access to reporting, quick portal construction, and easy integration to Office remain missing.”Information Week: “SAP will struggle because many employees will fear that on-demand software will cannibalize sales of conventional software licenses.”Internetnews.com: “SAP got immediate and what can only be called less-than-enthusiastic feedback from the very people it most hoped to please.”Cohen and Company: Business by Design is “too horizontal to sell into the mid-market, particularly the low end of the mid-market which demands a high degree of vertical expertise.”Microsoft: “While we certainly recognize other vendors as formidable competitors, at the end of the day the SMB spot is our sweet spot. We’ve been servicing this space for years.”IDC: “They need to have some kind of focus on what type of [small business] they are targeting… You wonder where all these [customers] are going to come from.”BusinessWeek: “If mishandled, SAP’s approach could present opportunities for competitors, including Oracle… Smaller rivals are also sniffing the same ground.”last_img read more

Dzeko: ‘Unacceptable refereeing’

first_imgEdin Dzeko said Willie Collum’s penalty decision was “unacceptable and cannot happen at this level” after Roma’s draw with Borussia Monchengladbach. Nicolò Zaniolo had put the Giallorossi in front with a header, but deep into stoppages the referee awarded a penalty in the Europa League match for handball, even though it clearly hit Chris Smalling in the face. “It’s a serious error that cannot happen at this level. It changes the result, the whole game, the group,” Dzeko told Sky Sport Italia. “Now we have another three games where anything could happen. A victory today would’ve made everything easier. I just don’t understand the referee, he was so sure that he was right, but I’d seen it hit Smalling in the face. When I saw the replay on television, it’s just incredible. “The referee kept insisting it was a penalty, I told him it was his face and not the hand. You could see the mark on Smalling’s face where the ball hit him. “You can’t give a penalty like that at the 95th minute. It’s unacceptable. We ran no risks at all in the second half and we’ve lost two points here. We can’t do anything about it now, we have to look forward.” Watch Serie A live in the UK on Premier Sports for just £11.99 per month including live LaLiga, Eredivisie, Scottish Cup Football and more. However, Roofe scored in the 91st and 93rd minutes to send the home supporters wild.Hull, meanwhile, recovered from a spell of patchy early-season form to go six games without defeat, having won four of those to climb up the table to 15th.Jackson Irvine’s double either side of an Alan Browne strike kept the club’s positive momentum going as they head into a difficult local derby with the table-toppers.The Tigers have picked up 14 games on their unbeaten run though will be dealt with the blow of the absent Irvine for their next run of matches. Their impressive recent form have assuaged fears of relegation and a win over Leeds could see them end the year with a move into the top half of the Championship table.City’s form on the road has been lethal, having amassed 11 points from their last five away games and netting 11 goals.last_img read more
